Donaustadt
The 22nd district, Donaustadt, is Viennas biggest and has a steadily growing population. One of two districts known as Transdanubien (across the Danube), due to its position on the east bank of the river, it was once predominantly rural. Its traditional villages remain intact, and extensive tracts of land are still worked by local farmers. The modern Kagran quarter in central Donaustadt is home to the United Nations quarter (UNO-City), the Austria Center and the Donauzentrum, Viennas biggest department store. Housing is affordable, and Donaustadt is considered the one place in Vienna where the real Viennese live. The sunken city close to Kagran underground station is bubbling with nightlife during the summer with scores of bars, restaurants and nightclubs and the so-called Copa Kagrana is awash with happening bars and busy eateries. One of Viennas most popular recreational areas, Neue Donau, has excellent swimming, surfing, rowing, cycling and sports facilities. The U1 and U2 underground lines connect Donaustadt directly to the centre and western Vienna and the Donau coastal highway runs north-south through the district along the Danube.
