Innere Stadt
Innere Stadt (City Centre), known as 1st district, is the historic heart of Vienna and home to its greatest attractions the Habsburgs Hofburg palace, the Spanish Riding School, the Vienna State Opera and the Stefansdom (St Stephens Cathedral) to name just a few. Centrally located, largely pedestrianised, affluent, elegant and expensive, the area boasts a sumptuous choice of clothing boutiques, jewellery shops and antique stores along the main Krtnerstrae and the surrounding area as well as some of the finest restaurants, cafes and theatres in Europe. Known simply as die Stadt (the city) to locals, its population has recently increased again following years of steady decline. Combined with its role as the administrative centre of both Vienna and Austria, the fine homes and quaintly cobbled streets make the Innere Stadt an attractive but exclusive location in which to live. The Innere Stadt is the main hub of the Vienna transport system with extensive bus, suburban railway and underground services and is surrounded by the citys Ringstrae inner ring road.
