The Amsterdam city council has drawn up a list of 3,000 words that children going up into third year of primary school must know. The list, which includes words such as juicy, wizard and surroundings, aims at helping children who speak little or no Dutch get a firm grounding in the language before being faced with more complex reading and writing tasks. Divided into vocabulary basics for beginners and grade two students, the word lists were compiled jointly by the council
