Nissan has announced that Barcelona has won the contract to build its new all-electric van at the company’s Zona Franca plant, close to the city’s port and airport. Assembly of the e-NV200 will begin in 2013.
The contract, worth €100 million, will create 700 new jobs. Barcelona won the contract in competition with Japan, China and Mexico.
The van is a development of the NV200, which is already built in Barcelona. The contract is the result of a new agreement with the unions, which have accepted greater internal working flexibility, as well as cost reductions.
Catalan companies will produce the electrical circuits but the batteries will come from the UK.
Nissan has two all-electric vehicles, with two more in the design phase. It expects to sell 1.5 million all-electric cars by 2016.
