Barcelona has seen the first drop in unemployment since the beginning of 2008. Figures released by the economic and employment commission for the last quarter of 2009 show that over 7,000 people more registered to pay national insurance than in the previous quarter.

The biggest rises in employment were in the technology sector. Despite this, 2009 saw a 36 per cent rise in registered unemployment in Barcelona. Council officials expressed cautious optimism over the figures.
