October is Black History Month and there is an extensive programme of arts and educational events across the capital, including an exhibition of work by African and Caribbean designers at the Victoria and Albert museum. First celebrated in London in 1987, Black History Month grew out of the USs Negro History Week (1926) and has developed into a public education initiative that aims to correct the inadequacies and inaccuracies in the teaching of Black History. Other events include an exhibition at City Hall, Black Dance in Britain 1930-1990, documentary screenings and illustrated talks.
