Voters in London have returned Boris Johnson, the Conservative party candidate, as mayor of London but only with a narrow victory over his Labour party rival, Ken Livingstone.

Johnson won thanks to second preference votes after he failed to gain the necessary 50 per cent to secure an outright victory. In the first round Johnson won only 44 per cent of the vote to Livingstone
