16 September marks the traditional annual car-free Sunday in Brussels at the start of European mobility week, which this year is from 16-22 September.
Numerous events take place on the first weekend, such as a folklore festival, a drama festival, a rural festival on the theme of sustainable food and a canal festival, which focuses on the uses and culture of canals.
Brussels has recently scrapped plans for low-emission zones in the city on the grounds that the benefits to the environment and mobility are not enough to merit the cost of introducing and enforcing the scheme. It has been decided that the emphasis should be on improving public transport instead.
