Vienna's East Region Traffic Alliance (VOR) has been awarded the Vienna Mobility Prize 2006 for its 'compano spare seat' car-pool service. Using internet booking and mobile phone text confirmation for commuters offering or seeking lifts across the Austrian capital, the winning project has been online since May of this year. However, so far the car-sharing initiative has had little success, with only 2 percent of available shared journeys being taken up. A recent study by the Austrian Traffic Club (VC) has shown that 47 percent of commuters travelling into Vienna use their own cars, while only 5 percent of car-users are in car-pools.
