A 400-year old painting widely attributed to Italian baroque master Caravaggio, stolen from a museum in the Ukraine two years ago, has been recovered in Berlin by German special forces.

German experts have authenticated the painting The Taking of Christ or The Kiss of Judas as being that stolen from the Museum for Western European and Oriental Art in Odessa in 2008. The painting is said to be potentially worth up to $100 million on the black market.

There is some controversy over the painting, which was only declared to be the work of Caravaggio in the 1950s by a Russian art expert and is a copy of a work held in the National Gallery, Dublin.
