French-based retailer Carrefour, the second largest in the world and the largest in Europe, has stopped giving out plastic carrier bags in its Madrid stores.

By the end of the year the move will have been rolled out across all its Spanish outlets. The company has said that in the transition period it will give out reusable bags for free and that others made from cotton and raffia will be available.

The measure is part of a global one to reduce the retailer
