Catalonia registers healthy increase in tourism

The number of foreign tourists visiting Catalonia from January to July this year showed an 8.9 per cent increase over the same period in 2011. This compares with an increase throughout the country of only 3.3 per cent.

For the first time since 2007 over two million tourists visited Catalonian resorts in July, a 9 per cent increase over the same month last year, compared with only a 4.4 per cent increase for the country as a whole.

Most tourists to Spain come from the United Kingdom, followed by Germany and France, but the country showing the greatest increase in tourists to Spain is the United States.

The figures are reported by Frontur, the agency that collects monthly statistics on visitors to Spain.
