Copenhagen’s traffic congestion commission is recommending 30,000 more bicycle parking spots in the city. The cost for the new racks would be about 300 million kroner.
The commission estimates that by 2025 there will be another 30,000 more commuters using bicycles from the S-train and regional train stations. Copenhagen Central station and Nørreport Station, now under redevelopment, are the ones where there is most congestion.
The national bicycle association says that more racks are badly needed, but that they must be located in the right place in the stations, not long distances from the trains.
In Copenhagen there are 390 kms of bike lanes and according to Denmark’s official website bicycling has become the most popular means of transport in Copenhagen. 37 per cent of people working or studying in the city prefer going by bicycle in the morning.
