The mayor of Londons council tax increase of 33.80 per year, a 13.3 per cent increase in his share of the unpopular tax, has been approved by the London Assembly. For a Band D household this will mean an increase of 65p a week. More than half of this sum will go towards paying for the Olympic Games to be held in London in 2012, while the rest will pay for the neighbourhood police teams, new fire rescue units and extra police at overground railway stations. The mayors 2.9 million budget was passed without amendments, although a majority of assembly members voted against three of the proposals. However a two-thirds majority is required to reject a proposal, and this percentage was not reached.
