Five new stations and around five kilometres of track have been added to Viennas U-bahn U1 line. The Austrian capitals heavily used north-south Underground connection - also known as the diameter line - now covers a total of around 15 km. The extension means travelling time from the central station of Stephansplatz to the new Leopoldau terminal in the Donaustadt district on the northern outskirts of Vienna now takes just 18 minutes. Other new stops along the line are Kagraner Platz at the junction of Donaufelder Strasse and Wagramer Strasse; Rennbahnweg, Aderklaaer Strasse and Grossfeldsiedlung. Ten new air-conditioned walk-through underground trains began service on the U1 and U3 lines at the beginning of September.
