Fewer expats to vote in Belgium’s local elections

According to figures released by the ministry of home affairs 18.4 per cent of expats from EU countries living in Belgium have registered to vote in the provincial and municipal elections on 14 October. Only 14 per cent of non-EU expats have registered.

This compares with 20.9 per cent of EU expats who registered for the 2006 local elections and 15.7 per cent of non-EU expats.

However the percentage of foreigners registered to vote in Belgium is higher than the European average on 10 per cent.

All foreigners over 18 and legally resident in Belgium for five consecutive years are eligible to vote in the local elections.
