In its first month in operation in November, the new Catalan police force, the Mossos dEsquadra, made a total of 1,589 arrests. Robbery, from petty theft to violent hold-ups by car thieves, was the most common crime. The districts of Cuitat Vella (Old Town) and Eixample had the highest crime rates, 25 per cent and 22 per cent respectively. During November the police were also called out to 206 cases of domestic violence. In an effort to appear citizen-friendly the Mossos police agents held nearly 650 meetings with local organizations in November.
