First social supermarket to open in Copenhagen
Wefood combats food waste to help the poor.
Copenhagen is set to launch Denmark's first "social supermarket" offering surplus food at much-discounted prices.
Wefood will be stocked with food that would otherwise be binned, supplied by a number of restaurants, cafès and supermarkets in the capital.
The 250-sqm store will open on 22 February, at Amagerbrogade 151, and will be run by volunteers from the Danish humanitarian organisation Folkekirkens Nødhjælp.
Although designed to offer cheap food to the socially-disadvantaged, the supermarket will be open to everyone, and all profits will go to fund Folkekirkens Nødhjælp projects around the world.
Each year more than 700,000 tons of food gets thrown out in Denmark.
