The Green Party (GroenLinks) in Zeeburg has put forward a proposal to address the shortage of bike parking places on the streets of the Dutch capital while simultaneously providing more greenery. The party is calling for local residents to adopt a flower box which would be positioned next to new bike racks, creating a screen of shrubbery. Each flower box would be the responsibility of a group of residents, who would also keep an eye on the cycles parked in their area. With 20 per cent of all bikes being stolen annually, lack of parking space and bicycle theft are two of the main problems facing Amsterdam
