The Strategic Development Zone (SDZ) plan for Hansfield in West Dublin, which was initially rejected in 2003 by An Bord Pleanla the planning appeals board has now been approved. Covering an area of 82 hectares adjacent to the Ongar Road, the SDZ will see the building of almost 3,000 high-density housing units plus a railway line to serve the new neighbourhood. The development will include a neighbourhood centre with schools, shops and medical facilities, child-care services and cafs, with a civic square as a focal point. All the new homes will be within walking distance of communal services and shops, to encourage residents to walk or cycle to their neighbourhood centre. The new rail line will connect Hansfield to Clonsilla Station on the Clonsilla-Dunboyne line.
