The Forest Hill Pools on Dartmouth Road are to be given a 4 million revamp as the result of a decision by Lewisham Council following a public consultation with residents. The pools, which serve the Forest Hill and Sydenham communities, were opened in 1885 as part of a Victorian crusade for health and safety, and are Londons oldest swimming baths. The council threatened to close the baths in 1996 to make way for a single-pool sports centre, but it has now decided to invest in refurbishment and improved facilities such as disabled access instead. Work on the pools should be completed by 2008. Meanwhile English Heritage is about to consider an application to make the Forest Hill baths a listed building.
