Slack safety measures have caused a number of serious property fires in Jersey in recent months.

A small child died and her mother was seriously injured in a fire in May when rental accommodation went up in flames in the early hours of the morning.

Only weeks later guests in a hotel had to be evacuated when a fire started on the premises, and in mid-July 50 people, among them young children, were forced to flee in the early evening from a lodging house which was totally destroyed by fire.

There were no casualties in either incident but dense smoke from the lodging house, which was quickly burnt to the ground, forced the closure of the nearby airport and the cancellation of flights affecting 400 people.
