Noise-reducing asphalt has been laid on 17,500 sqm of Barcelonas most famous thoroughfare, Las Ramblas, from Plaa de Catalunya to Portal de la Pau. The new surface should reduce traffic noise pollution levels by 2-4 decibels, according to the city councillor for maintenance and urban services, Francesc Narvez. Barcelona is the first European city to make extensive use of the new road surface, with the council planning to lay a further 520,000 sqm in the city centre by spring 2007.
