The number of sick children reporting to Viennas hospitals has doubled compared to the same period last year. The majority of young patients show symptoms of gastric flu or respiratory difficulties. Doctors have suggested that children with asthma or allergies have difficulty adjusting to seasonal temperature changes. The high levels of fine dust particles in the air has also been blamed for the rise. One out of four Viennese citizens suffers from allergies and one in 16 has asthma.
