As many cyclists in Amsterdam have discovered, finding a secure place for their bikes is a challenge. The first de Fietsenflat (bicycle flat) was created in 2001 a floating bike park with several floors of free parking space just to the west of Central Station. This Fietsenflat has space for only 2,600 bikes and there is still a pressing need for more parking space. The Amsterdam city council has now promised a second bicycle flat in the same area as an estimated 10,000 more bikes need somewhere to park.
