Dr Michael Eissenhauer has taken up his post as general director of the National Museums in Berlin. Elected unanimously by the board of trustees of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, Dr Eissenhauer has worked at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg and the German Historical Museum in Berlin, as well as directing the Art Collection of the Veste Coburg and most recently the Museumslandschaft Hessen Kassel, one of the largest museum institutions in Germany. Since 2003 he has also been president of the German Museums Association, representing the interests of over 6,000 museums in Germany. Dr Eissenhauer replaces art historian Peter-Klaus Schuster who held the position from August 1999 till October 2008.
