A 285,000 hybrid engine double-decker bus - the worlds first - is to go into service at the end of November on route 141 between Wood Green and London Bridge. The hybrid engine runs on a combination of diesel and electric power and will cut carbon dioxide emissions by up to 40 per cent.

Mayor Ken Livingston aims to introduce these environmentally friendly buses on all London routes. To this end he has invited bus manufacturers to tender for the production of the prototype double-decker, promising the contract for all new London buses to the first to mass produce the new vehicle. There are already six single-decker hybrid buses currently operating on route 360 from Elephant and Castle to Kensington.
