Conservative candidate Boris Johnson defeated Labour incumbent Ken Livingstone in the London mayoral elections of 1 May, which saw a record turnout of 45 per cent of registered voters. Johnson won 1,168,738 first and second preference votes, compared with Livingstone's 1,028,966, ending the incumbent
