Berlin is to have new U-bahn trains from 2014, the Berlin transport authority Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) has announced. New carriages are to be introduced on lines U1 to U4, replacing the current 45-year old stock.

The four-car trains will have improved energy efficiency, accessibility and passenger information systems. One fifth of energy absorbed during breaking by the trains will be fed back into the U-bahn power rail.
