Oxford may have a number of brand new social housing units by 2011 if a city application for government funding is successful.

For many years it has only been possible for housing associations to make such applications under a scheme to alleviate the lack of affordable housing in the south east.

The council has proposed funding for 60 units, of which 20 would be sheltered housing and, if the application is approved, work could begin in 2010 with a completion date of March 2011. Councillor Joe McManners, said,
