Oxford bids for Unesco World Book Capital

Oxford has launched its bid to become the Unesco World Book capital for 2014. The incumbent city is Yerevan in Armenia and Bangkok will be the capital in 2013.

The World Book Capital concept was first launched in 1996 to mark World Book and Copyright Day on 23 April and the first city chosen as the book capital of the world was Madrid in 2001.

Behind the Oxford 2014 bid are the Oxford University Press, the Bodleian Libraries, the Story Museum, Oxford Literary Festival and Oxford University, as well as the city’s numerous bookshops and the city council.
