Paris is testing new rules for cyclists in a few areas of the city. Bicyclists may now ignore red traffic lights if they are turning right at a junction and the road is clear. They may also cross a T-junction if the road is clear without stopping at the red light. However they must still give way to pedestrians.
The new rules are being tested at 15 junctions in two 30-kph areas of the 10th arrondissement and may be extended to other areas of Paris if they are successful.
The red-light waiver for bikes has already been tried in three other French cities, Strasbourg, Nantes and Bordeaux without an increase in accidents.
