Plaza de Margaret Thatcher

After a certain amount of controversy an area between Calle Goya, Calle Zurgena and Passeo Castellana, close to Plaza Colon in the Salamanca area of the centre city, is now called Plaza de Margaret Thatcher.

The idea to name a square after the late British prime minister was first mooted by the conservative mayor of Madrid Ana Botella last year but was contested left-wing city councilors who thought there might be worthier candidates.

Thanks to the insistence of the mayor the late Margaret Thatcher now joins a select group of other international political figures remembered in Madrid, such as Olof Palme, Salvadore Allende, Yiyzhak Rabin and Nelson Mandela.
