The 150th anniversary of the birth of Sigmund Freud is being celebrated in Vienna, where the father of psychoanalysis lived and worked for eight decades. A special exhibition entitled The Couch. Thinking in Repose is on show till 5 November at the Sigmund Freud Museum at 19 Berggasse, once Freuds home and studio. The Austrian Film Archive are dedicating a retrospective to his work entitled Freud and the cinema, and Austrian radio and television have broadcast programmes on his life and work. Documents, photographs and first editions of Freuds work are on display at Viennas University library from 10 May. However the celebrations are somewhat overshadowed by Mozarts 250th anniversary festivities, even seeing the cancelling of a special musical soire in Freuds honour at the Vienna Volksoper in preference to a repeat performance of Mozarts sold-out opera The Magic Flute.
