Rubbish strike in Amsterdam

Garbage collectors are on strike for three days in Amsterdam, starting 16 June, to support a request for a pay increase of 2.5 per cent backdated to 2013 and 3 per cent in 2014. There will be no household garbage collection or street cleaning during the strike.

Strike action first started at the end of April in a dispute with the municipal governments in Amsterdam, as well as in Utrecht and Groningen.

After strike action in May firemen also worked to clear the backlog of rubbish on the streets because pay increases will eventually also benefit other municipal employees.
