The Catalan photographer Samuel Aranda has won the 55th edition of the World Press Photo of the year.

The photo portrays a veiled woman cradling a wounded relative inside a mosque during the protests in Yemen in October 2011 against the regime of Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Aranda was working freelance for the New York Times and is represented by Corbis Images.

Aranda started his photographic career when he was 19 with El Pais and El Peri
