Over 10,000 small businesses were set up in the Brussels region during 2007 according to statistics just released by the Agence bruxelloise pour l'entreprise (ABE). The record number of start-ups has gone hand-in-hand with a decline in the number of business failures (from 21 percent in 2003 to 14.1 percent in 2007), earning Brussels an overall ranking of seventh in Europe for entrepreneurial dynamism. Of the 10,471 new enterprises created in 2007, 43 per cent were one-person businesses and 42 per cent private limited companies (SPRL) with a predominantly youthful profile (60 per cent aged between 25-40). Foreigners made up almost a third of the new entrepreneurs.
