The British Airports Authority (BAA) has unveiled plans to build a second runway at Stansted airport. The project, which is to cost 2.7 billion, will include construction of a new 3000 m runway, a terminal building, control tower, parking facilities and a new road link to the M11. Currently Stansted has the capacity to cope with 19 million passengers a year. The new project entitled Stansted G2 would help boost capacity to 76 million a year by 2030. However the local pressure group Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) is planning to fight the project, which it claims would have an impact across Essex, Hertfordshire and Suffolk. Previous plans for a second runway at Stansted have never found favour with the planning authorities.
