Residents of Amsterdam are being offered free tests for the virus hepatitis C during a campaign by the public health service Gezond Amsterdam (GGD) to raise awareness of the disease. Hepatitis C, which attacks the liver causing cirrhosis and liver cancer, is infectious and is passed by blood-to-blood contact. Sufferers are often unaware that they have the virus, which can be carried for many years without any symptoms.
