The village of 'Fucking' changes name

The small village of Fucking, in Austria, is happy to change its name with the new year. As from 2021, it will be called Fugging.

A handful of houses in the Austrian countryside, about 30 km from Salzburg and 4 from the German border, where just over a hundred people live. Yet this tiny hamlet of the Austrian town of Tarsdorf is famous worldwide for its name: Fucking, a meaningless word in German but not in English.

Over the years the village has thus become a destination for tourists, especially native English speakers, not so much interested in the beauty of the place, but for the possibility of taking a photo next to the road sign.

In 2004 the proposal to change the name of the town was rejected by popular referendum, but at the time there were no social networks. With the spread, especially of Instagram, the arrivals in Fucking have multiplied and people can no longer want be mocked worldwide.

So, backed by the villagers, the mayor announced that from 1 January 2021 the village will no longer be called Fucking but Fugging.
