This year the Madrid city council is to spend almost 20 million on promoting the Spanish capital as a top international tourist destination, a 40 per cent increase over 2005. The councils 2006 Plan of Action for Madrid includes promoting the city as a centre for congresses and trade fairs and improving tourist information around town and on internet; the DiscoverMadrid website (currently in English and Spanish) is to be translated into German, French, Italian and Japanese. Year-round tourism is to be encouraged and cinema production companies are to be given incentives to use Madrid as their base. The council will also directly promote cultural, gastronomic, leisure and sporting activities through its Marca Madrid branding programme.
