Vienna International Airport (VIA) has announced a dramatic fall in passenger numbers for the first quarter of 2009. Overall, the number of passengers from January to March fell 14.8 per cent to 3,660,091, with March alone showing a drop of 15.6 per cent year on year, to 1,368,380. It is estimated that passenger numbers for 2009 will be nine per cent less than 2008, bringing numbers back to 2007 levels.

Eastern European destinations suffered the biggest falls with numbers down by 19.1 per cent, and the Middle East dropping by 6.4 per cent. VIA also announced a steep rise in the estimated costs of its Skylink terminal expansion, from
