Vienna exceeded EU limits for the type of particulate pollution mostly caused by vehicle exhaust fumes last year and now faces stiff penalties from the EU for breaching air quality legislation.

One measuring station in the capital exceeded the EU limit on 87 days, more than double the acceptable amount of 35 days per year, reports the Austrian Times. 2010 showed a rise in pollution levels over the whole of Austria, but the highest levels recorded were in Vienna.
