20 May-1 July 2006. The Abbey Theatre presents Brian Friels adaptation of Ivan Turgenevs dramatic comedy A Month in the Country, directed by Jason Byrne. Set in 19th-century rural Russia, the story revolves around Aleksy, a poor young graduate who is spending a month at the wealthy Islayev familys country estate. Employed as the tutor to the son of the family, Aleksy soon becomes caught up in a series of love triangles involving the beautiful lady of the house, Natalya Petrovna and her ward Vera. First performed in 1872, A Month in the Country was revived several times during Turgenevs lifetime and was playing in St Petersburg on the day of his funeral.
