Albert Oehlen: Painting

The MUMOK presents the first exhibition in Austria to showcase the work of contemporary German artist Albert Oehlen, including key works from all of the most important stages of his career.

Oehlen is remembered for the provocative stance he adopted in the early 1980s when he questioned whether painting was still possible, or indeed relevant.

His view was that the medium was limited and had had its day, a notion that caused controversy in more academic quarters.

Within a decade Oehlen had moved towards abstraction, gravitating to digitally generated images in the 1990s.

Over the last ten years the artist has incorporated elements of photographic collages into his work.
