27 Sept-15 Oct 2006. The acclaimed Covent Garden Opera House production of Richard Strausss Ariadne auf Naxos directed by Christof Loy comes to the Teatro Real. First performed in 1912, Strausss opera is set in the home of the richest man in Vienna just after the arrival of two groups of musicians: one a burlesque group and the other an opera company. The operas prologue sees the actors backstage preparations for their various performances, which are thrown into confusion by the Major Domos announcement that the two groups have to perform at the same time. Following a play-within-the-play structure, the next act begins with the opera companys primadonna playing Ariadne, bewailing her fate on the island of Naxos having been abandoned there by Theseus. Zerbinetta and her companions from the burlesque group vainly attempt to cheer her up, in a striking contrast of classical and commedia dellarte musical and theatrical styles. The opera concludes with the arrival of Bacchus, god of wine and fertility, who falls in love with Ariadne at first sight. The cast includes Anne Schwanewilms, Diana Damrau and Richard Margison, all appearing at the Teatro Real for the first time. Musical direction by Jess Lpez Cobos. The elegant set is designed by Herbert Murauer. Admission opening night 235-16.50, all other performances 136-15.00, under-26s concession 6. Performances 27, 29 & 30 Sept, 2, 4, 5, 7, 10, 12 & 14 Oct at 20.00, 8 & 15 Oct at 18.00.
