Aristocrats

18 June-2 Aug. The Abbey Theatre presents one of the finest plays by one of Ireland's foremost living playwrights. Artistocrats by Brian Friel follows the well-to-do O'Donnell family, once influential but now down on its luck. The play begins with a wedding and ends up as a wake at the clan's crumbling ancestral home, Ballybeg Hall.

Friel examines the collapse of a Catholic Irish aristocratic family during a politically volatile period in Ulster, and asks whether the O'Donnells can forge a new identity before it is too late.

Directed by Patrick Mason, starring John Kavanagh, Cathy Belton and Tom Hickey. Aristocrats was premiered at the Abbey in 1979. Mon-Sat 19.30. Sat 14.00
