Behind the Seams: An indiscreet look at the mechanics of Fashion

This unusual exhibition delves into the history of male and female undergarments and how they have evolved over the centuries.

On show are numerous devices such as the zip, the pannier, the corset, the crinoline, the stomach belt, the bra and other contraptions used to "shape" the body according to prevailing fashions.

The mechanics of some of the items on display are surprisingly complicated, with many constructed using whale bones, wire hoops and cushions.

The exhibition also reveals that  contrary to common misconceptions  these concealed garments and accessories are far from being a modern-day phenomenon, and in fact came into constant use from at least the 14th century.

Mon-Fri 09.00-13.00/14.00-18.00.
