1 Feb-23 Aug 2008. The French occupation of Belgium from 1794 to 1815 resulted, among other things, in the widespread closure of convents and abbeys and the disintegration of their libraries. An enormous number of manuscripts and printed works consequently found their way onto the market and were snapped up by 19th-century bibliophiles wanting to enrich their collections.
