20 May - 5 July. Brussels presents a programme of cultural events dedicated to the theme of Emperor Charles V and the influence he had on the Belgian capital. During his 40-year reign between 1515 and 1555, Brussels became an increasingly powerful city in the Low Countries, which comprised Belgium, modern-day Holland and a swathe of north-eastern France. To discover more about Charles V, who also ruled the Holy Roman Empire, step back in time with a festival full of guided tours, period costumes, knights, feasts and a mediaeval village in Place du Grand Sablon.
